At FIIT Learning Academy in Addiscombe, Croydon, we know that motivation doesn’t come from pressure it comes from connection. For many of our learners, especially those with SEND or SEMH needs, the difference between giving up and showing up is often one trusted adult who believes in them. That person is their mentor.
Every student at FIIT is paired with a dedicated mentor, a consistent, caring presence who helps them set goals, stay on track, and believe in their own potential.
Some learners arrive feeling disheartened or disconnected from education. They’ve often heard what they can’t do more times than what they can. Mentoring changes that narrative.
A mentor doesn’t just focus on grades, they focus on the whole person. They listen, guide, and encourage. They help learners manage setbacks, celebrate small wins, and rediscover the joy of learning.
Mentoring gives students three powerful things:
Consistency – someone who shows up every day, without judgement.
Accountability – gentle encouragement to keep moving forward.
Belief – a reminder that they are capable, resilient, and worthy of success.
At FIIT Learning, our mentors use relational, therapeutic, and coaching approaches to help students stay engaged and inspired.
1️⃣ Daily Check-Ins
Each morning, learners have a safe space to talk about how they’re feeling, set intentions, and prepare for the day ahead. These moments of connection create emotional safety and stability, vital for motivation.
2️⃣ Goal Setting and Reflection
Mentors work with students to set realistic, achievable goals linked to both learning and personal growth. By tracking progress, learners see tangible evidence of their improvement — boosting confidence and drive.
3️⃣ Celebrating Progress
We celebrate effort as much as achievement. Mentors highlight the “small wins”, arriving on time, completing a piece of work, or managing emotions well, because those moments build the foundation for bigger success.
4️⃣ Restorative Support
When things go wrong (as they sometimes do), mentors use restorative conversations to help learners reflect and repair. This approach builds responsibility and resilience rather than shame or avoidance.
5️⃣ Strengths-Based Coaching
Mentors focus on what learners can do. By linking lessons to interests, music, fashion, gaming, art, sport they help students see learning as personal and meaningful.
The Emotional Power of Being Believed In
Mentors don’t just support motivation they rebuild self-worth. For some learners, their mentor is the first adult in education who truly sees their strengths. That belief changes everything. When a young person feels valued and capable, they start showing up differently, not because they have to, but because they want to.
At FIIT Learning Academy, mentoring is not an add-on, it’s the heart of our provision. Our mentors act as role models, motivators, and emotional anchors, helping students navigate challenges and move steadily toward success.
We’ve seen over and over that one consistent relationship can change the entire direction of a young person’s life. That’s the power of a mentor and it’s why every learner at FIIT Learning has one.
Because with the right guidance, encouragement, and care, every student can rise.
